Since finishing Middlesex, I've been reading Tearing the Silence by Ursula Hegi. It's a nonfiction book about how German-Americans born near the end of World War II deal with their German identity. Basically Hegi conducted a bunch of interviews with people who fit the demographic she was interested in, and asked them about what their parents told them about the war, how they learned about the Holocaust, the circumstances of their immigration, and how they felt about their cultural identity. It's a fairly interesting book, and I like the fact that she's presenting the interviews on their own, withholding her analysis until the end of the book. As I keep reading it, however, I'm beginning to find that all the different interviews are beginning to blend together. There are just too many of them, and they cover too much of the same material. Nonetheless, it's an interesting topic.
