I haven't read a thing since I finished Cloud Atlas in the middle of last week. This is because I foolishly boxed up all of my books to move, even the unread ones, without it ever crossing my mind that I might want one of them. Right. So I've been getting more and more frustrated about not having anything to read, until this morning I finally just started opening boxes until I found something I hadn't read yet. The book I came upon was Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which I hadn't been planning to read for a while, but I suppose it's appropriate that it's the first book I'm reading in my new place since it was my new house present from [livejournal.com profile] moiethegreat, after all. And because the author apparently thinks it should be my coffee table book. Whatever.

Anyhow, the book seems pretty good so far, although I've only read about twenty pages and I can already see that Foer's narrative voice is walking a very fine line between quirkily endearing and overly precious. We'll have to see whether I settle in and get used to it as the book goes on, or whether it just gets more annoying. I think it will be interesting to read this book so soon after reading Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha. Roddy Doyle did such a perfect job of capturing the inner life of his child-narrator that I'm not sure how Foer can possibly compete. But I liked Everything Is Illuminated an awful lot, so at the very least I've got to give Foer the benefit of the doubt...

In other news, I broke a mirror last night. Better stay away from me for the next seven years, unless the bad luck rubs off on you.
