I absolutely adore -The Dark Is Rising-. I first read the series when I was twelve or so, and just a few years ago I read whole thing aloud to my youngest sister, when *she* was twelve or so, which was a wonderful experience. Both are really excellent series. For years I've been toying with the idea of sharing the Earthsea books with Maureen (the aforementioned sister), but somehow it always seems that my feelings about those particular books are a little too intense, too personal, too much a part of my history and my definition of myself to share with somebody in as intimate a way as reading aloud. The post that I wrote right after finishing -The Farthest Shore- gives some clue as to the intensity of feeling sometimes sparked in me by those books. I couldn't even read them to my girlfriend, although they are wonderful reading aloud books. As I'm sure your boyfriend realizes. : )
