I think I mentioned this to you on Goodreads, but my girlfriend really enjoyed San Miguel too. Ad I've certainly enjoyed other books of his. So who knows? Maybe there was just something about this subject matter that made it unsuited for his style.
I almost always do finish books even when I'm not enjoying them. I know it's silly, but I find it very difficult to put something down and not see it all the way through to the end.
