I had a similar deal with Henry James, although with different works. I'd read the Turn of the Screw and hated, hated, hated it. A few years ago I got around to reading Washington Square. I was utterly and completely fascinated. I went on and read Portrait of a Lady which I also adored. Haven't gotten back to him yet but I really consider him one of my Big Time Literary Loves these days.

Incidentally, though, I still hate Turn of the Screw, even after a hopeful re-read.
