renewed interest?
Jul. 25th, 2001 10:39 amI thought of a way that might make this a more interesting experience for me. Rather than simply keeping a journal, which I prefer to do on paper and then only write rarely anyway, I will use this space as a kind of reading journal, where I can record what I'm reading and my thoughts. I think that if I were randomly browsing around here I would find that infinitely more interesting than boring recountings of what went on my day every day. I think I will also find it infinitely more interesting to keep this way.
With that said...
I'm currently reading Larry McMurtry's _Lonesome Dove_, and finding it to be an amazing book. Reading it has been a very interesting experience... It's quite long, somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 pages. When I started reading it I was poking along, thinking that it was well written, but there wasn't much plot. I read very slowly, gradually absorbing the story of the cowboys setting off on a tremendous cattle drive. Then suddenly, about 400 pages into the book, it took off and I was completely hooked. I have no idea what happened that suddenly changed things, but I've become totally engrossed and unable to put the book down. Funny, hunh?
This book has also been an interesting experience for me since it's a departure from my usual style. E. is very into the old west, loves traveling around out there, seeing the old towns, the deserts in Arizona and New Mexico, loves watching movies like High Noon and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre... I have never been into that stuff, however, and have never had much interest in pursuing it with her. After a year of her telling me to read this book, however, I finally relented and I'm very glad I did. It's one of those epics that is just so well and thoroughly written that you are fully absorbed into the world of the novel. I still don't know that I'll be willing to park myself in front of John Wayne movies with her, however.
The bottom line is that I highly recommend this book, and I also highly recommend sticking with it if it seems like slow going at first.
