(no subject)
Nov. 11th, 2002 02:07 pmE. and I made a trip to Border's this weekend, so I now have several shiny new books to read and write about! Very exciting.
On Sunday I read Flaming Iguanas by Erika Lopez, a book which bills itself as "an illustrated all-girl road novel thing." Lopez is great. Her books deal with serious subjects; race, sexual identity, feminism, class, the whole nine yards. However, her books absolutely refuse to take themselves seriously and therefore are totally engrossing, hilarious, and completely fun to read. She mixes up the text with all kinds of art, which only adds to whole experience of reading one of her books. To get all academic and analytical would only spoil things, so all I have to say is that Erika Lopez is great and everyone should read her. Flaming Iguanas is excellent, and They Call Me Mad Dog is even better.
Having whipped through Flaming Iguanas yesterday, I have started on The Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri. It's much too early for me to have formed an opinion on the book, but it's looking good so far...
