Since -The Telling- wasn't really the phenomenal book that I had hoped it would be, I've decided to reread what I consider to be Ursula K. LeGuin's absolute best work. I'm a big fan of rereading, and I tend to reread her Earthsea series almost every year. (And I have since I was in eighth grade-scary!) I can't think of any other books that can even compare to this series in terms of being moving, thought-provoking, and beautiful. The four books are -A Wizard of Earthsea-, -The Tombs of Atuan-, -The Farthest Shore-, and -Tehanu-. I don't care if you are someone who is diametrically opposed to science fiction and fantasy, you should read these books regardless. They are beautiful, and that's about all I have to say.

Date: 2001-10-04 05:36 pm (UTC)Books can be so hard to share, i become very defensive of the books i love most. i'm glad you've read _The Dark is Rising_ i'm on my yearly reading of that series. Currently halfway through the Greenwitch. *swoon*
i'm going to need more books soon, but it's also thesis time so i need light reading. Any suggestions?

Date: 2001-10-05 01:50 pm (UTC)It's funny that you should mention light reading, because one of my housemates was asking for light reading recommendations just last night. It's not exactly something I specialize in, as my taste in books tends to run toward the depressing and disturbing. So I don't really know... Have you read any Vonnegut? He has a really off-the-wall sense of humor, so it could be a good distraction from thesis-writing.

Date: 2001-10-05 02:01 pm (UTC)i have indeed read a lot of Vonnegut. i was actually hoping you could recommend more children's series maybe. i couldn't wait to read "adult" books when i was younger and i feel like i missed out of one of the most amusing genres of writing (though the best ones weren't necessarily written for young adult consumption i suppose)

Date: 2001-10-05 02:42 pm (UTC)Recommending children's series is something that I'm much more equipped to do, especially if your tastes run toward fantasy. There's a good series by Geraldine Harris called -Seven Citidels-, of which the four individual books are called -The Prince of the Godborn-, -The Children of the Wind-, -The Dead Kingdom-, and -The Seventh Gate-. I have also heard excellent things about Phillip Pullman's -His Dark Materials- trilogy (-The Golden Compass-, -The Subtle Knife-, and -The Amber Spyglass-). I haven't read that series, but I have read other things by Pullman, which have been excellent, and my little sister liked it alot. And my girlfriend loves anything and everything by Edgar Eager, so I'm sure she'd recommend that you check out -Half Magic-, and the rest of that series....
Hope some of that is helpful.
